What are spiders?
Spiders are beneficial organisms found in almost any habitat and help control populations of insects and other pests. Though they are often called insects, they are not insects. They are arachnids which means that adults have eight legs, two body segments, and lack antennae and wings.
Two things that spiders are well known for are the silk and venom they produce. All spiders produce silk that they use for various things, including building webs, lining burrows, and as a means of transportation. Their venom is delivered into their prey through their hollow fangs to paralyze it and aid in the feeding process.
Are spiders dangerous?
Only a small percentage of spiders living worldwide are dangerous to people, and in the United States, the ratio is even lower. There are only two species of spiders in the U.S that have venom strong enough to trigger health problems in people. The majority of spiders you will find in your yard or home are only dangerous to the insects they are hunting.
No matter the species, spiders are capable of biting people but typically only do so if they are being squished or otherwise threatened. Believe it or not, spiders are shy by nature and would rather stay away from people and other larger animals than cause them harm.
Why do I have a spider problem?
If spiders are living in large populations in your yard or home, it is because they have discovered a dependable source of food. Like most living creatures, spiders want to live in an area that puts them close to their preferred food sources.
Both our indoor and outdoor spaces often become home to large populations of insects. While spiders tend to be outdoor pests, they won't hesitate to follow their prey indoors and, once inside, stay as long as there is a reliable source of food.
The best way to control spiders is to limit their prey through regular pest control services!
Where Will I Find Spiders?
Outside in our yards, spiders hang out in grassy areas, gardens, trees, and shrubs, staying hidden from predators and hunting their insect prey. Like most of their prey, spiders that have made their home inside our houses want to live in dark, quiet spaces. Some of the most common indoor hiding spots include underneath stairs, in crawl spaces or closets, and behind cabinets or bookshelves. They also like to hang out in the corners of rooms, window sills, and doorways.
