What are occasional invaders?
Many of the pests homeowners are concerned with and need to protect their homes against are a year-round, daily threat.
Other pests live most of their lives entirely outside, content to feed and breed outdoors, and only occasionally find their way into our homes and businesses!
Typically, unsuitable living conditions drive occasional invaders indoors, such as dry weather, heavy rains, cold temperatures, and scorching temperatures. In Southern California, there are three types of occasional invaders that regularly find their way into our structures:
- Silverfish
- Earwigs
Beetles
Are occasional invaders dangerous?
Though annoying to have living around or inside of our homes in large numbers, occasional invaders aren't pests that are considered extremely dangerous. They don't spread pathogens that make people seriously ill, nor are they aggressive. However, they are not entirely innocent; their presence does bring with them some problems.
- They spread bacteria from their legs and bodies to surfaces in our homes.
- Occasional invaders sometimes get into and contaminate pantry items stored within our home.
- Some will chew on and damage fabric items like clothing, furniture, blankets, and rugs.
Why do I have an occasional invader problem?
If your home can provide occasional invaders with moisture and shelter, they will take advantage. When living outside in your yard, at some point, they will likely see your home, garage, or other outbuildings as a place of refuge. Occasional invaders will take advantage of any space they come across, with some of the most common points of entry listed below:
- Cracks in the foundation and exterior walls
- Gaps in the foundation
- Damaged trim
- Space under doors
- Loose or torn screens
- Vents and spaces around wires and utilities moving in your home
Where Will I Find Occasional Invaders?
Many of the places where occasional invaders like to gather you'll find in most Southern California yards. Typically these pests prefer to live in damp, dark areas making mulch, flowerbeds, gardens, landscaping ties, and spaces under decks and trash cans popular hangouts.
When occasional invaders move indoors, they move to areas that mimic their outdoor environment. Our kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and crawl spaces are common hideouts for these pests. Homeowners often come across silverfish, beetles, and earwigs under sinks, in cabinets, around tubs, and in boxes, closets, or stacks of books or newspapers.
